Political Science

Political Science is the study of politics and political systems, both foreign and domestic.  Students will learn how politics have been practiced throughout history.  They will study great leaders, and very poor leaders, and learn lessons from each.  Courses also include studies of other political systems and their levels of success.  Students will also be caused to come up with political solutions to problems and to engage in debates defending their positions.

Graduates with degrees in political science often pursue careers in politics.  These jobs can be fiercely competitive, however, especially in the nation’s capital.  There are many political jobs at the local or state level: mayor, governor, city council, state senate, city manager or sheriff, to name a few.  Or you could be part of the entourage a high profile political candidate needs: pollsters, researchers, public relations, advisors, strategists and publicists.

There are also jobs outside of the political realm for Political Science majors.  Some become political pundits and share their political opinions with the media.  Others write books about politics and social issues; many have become best-sellers.

In any case, expect to spend some time as an intern learning the tricks of the trade through experience and communication with successful politicians.  In the world of politics, experience is the gold standard.
