Medical Imaging Science

Medical Imaging Science encompasses many medical professions that are among the fastest growing careers in the field of medicine.  These professions include Radiology, Sonography, Endoscopy, Medical Photography, Thermography and Microscopy.  These duty of these professionals are to develop images for clinical purposes to assist a physician in diagnosing or treating a patient.  The techniques learned through a degree in Medical Imaging science could also be used to monitor the health of a patient (as is the case with an EEG), or could even treat a patient directly (as with radiation therapy).

As with advanced nursing, the demand for skilled medical imaging technicians is very high.    A knowledge of anatomy, math and chemistry are very helpful for students considering entering a career in medical imaging.  A high school education or equivalent is required to enter a program in medical imaging or radiological science.  Because demand is so high, the amount of educationneeded for a career varies.  So me institutions will want an advanced degree, others will be in such need that a certificate could be enough to get you the job.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for a diagnostic medical sonographer is $57,000 a year.  Nuclear medical technologists earn a median annual salary of $62,300.  And radiologic technicians earn $48,000 a year.
