Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is Engineering applied at its most basic level.  Mechanical Engineers design machines and other mechanical equipment to accomplish a certain task. These mechanical products can be as basic as a crescent wrench, as large as a cruise ship, as powerful as a V-10 engine, as life-saving as a light-weight, high-density composite material for bullet-proof armor, or as innovative as a 460cc, high-MOI, adjustable-weight driver.

Because Mechanical Engineering is the foundation of Engineering, it is less likely that a student will be required to pick an area of concentration.  There are often more focused or specialized courses available for interested students but the fundamental knowledge acquired from a Mechanical Engineering major is so widely applicable, a student could do just as well without them.

Mechanical Engineers earn an average annual salary of about $75,000, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistcs.
