English
The profane Broadway musical "Avenue Q" condescendingly asked "What Do You Do with a B.A. in English?"
Four years of college and plenty of knowledge,
Have earned me this useless degree.
I can't pay the bills yet,
'Cause I have no skills yet,
The world is a big scary place.
Nothing could be further from the truth. People who can's find a career with an English degree simply aren't trying hard enough. In addition to the obvious English careers -- such as writer, novelist, poet, teacher, etc. -- there are many options for English graduates. In fact, the other careers may be preferable. There are more opportunities and often pay better than English professions.
Journalism is an oft-overlooked career. An English major can work in any of the Journalism fields; broadcast, newspaper, magazine and online. You will already have the writing and editing acumen to report the news or write feature stories. The only skills you will be lacking is gathering information and interviewing. Or you could become a copy-editor looking for factual/grammatical/spelling errors in news print.
You could work in public relations, or writing speeches and press releases for business or government organizations.
Or you could work in business. Business majors, in general, care more about sales, supplies, finances, and other things to do with numbers. There is plenty of room for people who have skills with words. In areas like marketingan public relations, someone with communications skills or writing skills, or someone with a modicum of creativity can prove very valuable.
Don't brush off an English degree.
