Majoring in Elementary Education prepares a student for teaching grades 1-6.  Because Elementary school teachers are generalists , the curriculum will comprise various liberal arts classes as well as classes in science, math, history, music and art.  Teachers at the elementary level will be expeted to possess the ability to teach all of these subjects at an intermediate level. 

Many education degrees have an area of emphasis allowing the teacher to specialize in one subject over another.  The concentration can be in any subject taught at the elementary school level; literature, math, foreign languag,e science, history, socal studies, etc.

The duties are much greater in elementary schools than those at the early childhood education level, which are tantamount to childcare.  Because there is a greater level of responsibility at the elementary school level, elementary school teachers can demand a much higher salary.  According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statisticcs, the annial wafe of an elementary school teacher is $50,000 a year.
