Advertising and Marketing

The best way to think of Marketing is like this: it is the child of Psychology and Business.  The curriculum for marketing is a healthy blend of both.

Marketing is no longer purely about generating sales.  Rather it is about in-depth consumer analysis, monitoring current trends in popular culture and not just designing a marketing strategy, but designing new products that fill an unmet consumer need.  

You will be studying new marketing techniques like underground marketing, marketing in video games, event sponsorships, and other non-traditional marketing concepts.  You will learn to identify the target market for a product, and customize a marketing campiagn best suited for reaching them.  It is as much a creative field as it is a business field.  While generating sales is still the end goal, the means through which you do it are allow you much more free reign, and opportunities for unconventional thinking.

With new technologies and media emerging rapidly, it is a very exciting time to work in the field of marketing.  TV and print advertising are dying as TiVo and other technologies allow you to "Zap out" commercials.  All it takes is one bright idea to completely revolutionize the field or promotion, and it will be someone studying right now who comes up with that great idea.
